syrians in the u-s next year. all but one of those governors are republican. opposition to the resettlement plans exploded after it was revealed at least one suspect in the paris attacks slipped into europe posing as a syrian refugee. governors in seven states have said they will accept refugees and several others haven't commented on the issue. jack: iowa governor terry branstad first said that he would leave it up to the federal government to decide -- but a few hours later, he changed his mind. he's ordering all state agencies to halt any work on syrian refugee resettlements immediately. ""branstad :34 we need to be concerned about isis radicals imbedded with these refugees.1:18 we don't want to become like europe where they let these refugees in, and now they're sending police to roundup the dangerous embedded isis militants that are part of it." jack:

legal authority to limit or control immigration. but individual states can limit or deny services to refugee populations. . jack/wxhang governor branstad isn't stopping some iowa organizations from carrying on with their plans to help refugees. local 5's amanda krenz checked in with one of them in sioux city. amanda/wxhang the sioux city area is expecting a large number of refugeesto come work in a new meat processing plant there within the next couple of weeks. and local activists there think branstad's statement is sending the wrong message. "it's counter productive to what we are trying to do to our community. we are trying to help immigrants esepcially refugee immigrants get away from violent war torn areas like syria to become better people. people are coming from syria to better themselves to get out of a violent area and nescassarily to bring harm to us." syrian immigrants moved to the united states last year. and back in september, secretary of state john kerry announced that an estimated 85 thousand total refugees are expected to be resettled here in the u-s. amanda/wxhang bell says they are very well equipped to handle new refugees coming to the area and that they are working on new strategies to help them settle in. jack/wxhang any idea where those refugees are from? amanda/wxhang no word yet on exactly where they're from, just that there will be a lot of them. jack: we want to know what you think. should refugees be allowed in iowa -- or in the u-s for that matter? let us know -- we may use your comments on-air. you can post you thoughts on facebook and twitter.

dead and four others injured after a single car crash just before midnight monday. the accident happened just off highway 20 near exit 140. police say a 19- year-old from south carolina was driving six people when she lost control on the exit ramp and rolled the car several times. the driver and one passenger were killed -- police say neither were wering seatbelts. the four other passengers were hurt, but are in stable condition. one female passenger was listed as a runaway and is now in police custody. jack: and in pella -- one person died and another was injured in a single-car crash on highway 163. police say the driver lost control of his vehicle, went over the shoulder, over corrected and hit a tree. the elderly female passenger was found dead at the scene. her name is being witheld until family is notified. the driver has a head injury. jack/lam the red cross is asking for caution after helping out at more than a dozen fires across the state since last friday.
6:07 pm
here's a look at where those fires were. red cross officials say as the weather gets colder, more people are using space heaters -- which are the second leading cause of home fire deaths. to keep safe in the winter months - the red cross has a few tips for you. all heaters need space -- so keep other items like paper, pets and children at least three feet away. never leave a fire in a fireplace unattended -- and always use a fire screen. never use a cook top or oven to heat your home. and always plug space heaters directly into an outlet -- don't use an extension cord. jack: back here in the metro -- police are trying to figure out how a fire was started in the men's bathroom of a restaurant. crews were called to malo monday night, after an employee smelled smoke in the men's bathroom the employee says he found the trash knocked over and a fire by the toilet. the fire was quickly put out -- an investigation is ongoing. jack coming up on

however, it could be enough to cause some problems on roadways for the evening rush hour. after this, we are going to have a pretty chilly weekend with highs only in the 30s. brad/2wx: that's all for my forecast. check out weareiowa.com for the latest in weather . independent weather experts" brad/wxwall: it has been a wet, but mild day over much of iowa today. the heaviest rains have stayed away from central iowa with locations in western and eastern iowa getting more than 1" today, but the metro has just over one half inch so far. more showers will be possible into this evening especially over eastern iowa. we will stay mild tonight with temps in the 50s overnight, but cooler air will start settling in wednesday with steady or falling temps during the day. there will be a chance for some drizzle or light showers wednesday, but then clearing skies for thursday. however, we are going to have some very strong winds thursday from the west at 20-30+ mph which will make those 40s seem more like 20s and 30s! we are watching friday closely as a quick moving weather system will come into the colder environment and try to get some snow going over iowa friday afternoon/evening. right now, it looks like we could see a band of 1-3" possible for mainly the grassy areas because ground temperatures are still in the mid to upper 40s. however, it could be enough to cause some problems on roadways for the evening rush

"iowa closes out their home schedule against purdue this weekend. with a win they can clinch the big ten west but they aren't thinking in terms of the bigger picture just yet. anything for granted i know the conversation today hasn't been on purdue, our conversations have been strictly on purdue, we got a lot of respect for them and respect for thier coaching staff. (tevaun smith) we can't walk into this game thinking it's going to be easy just because of their record i mean (giaimo) and even with all their success this year, the hawkeyes aren't looking past a boilermaker team that has just two wins this season. (leshun daniels) they're dangerous, i mean you look at the games, they don't really get blown out like you might think that they do. i mean they're a tough group of guys. they go out there each week and compete hard so we got to make sure we're ready and we don't go out there sleeping on purdue. (jordan canzeri) we know they are going to give it all that they have. they are going to show us things we haven't seen before on their film and they're going to bring the

(alex giaimo) the hawkeyes have a chance to make it a perfect 7 and 0 at kinnick stadium this season. in iowa city, with your hawkeye headquarters report, alex giaimo " iowa and purdue kick off at 11 am on espn 2. once again a win locks them in for the big ten title game-- something that iowa has not done since the conference created the championship game back in 2011. jon: thursday night's 3a football championship game features two teams from district 7. it's no secret who the favorite is in this one-- pella but norwalk is okay with that. they're ready to show they can compete with number one team in class 3a. the norwalk warriors don't need to be reminded that they were shut out by the dutch back on september 18th in their only loss of the 2015 campaign. it's a motivating factor for norwalk who has only given up 18 points in their three post season games. norwalk has leaned heavily on junior quarterback brady brandsfield who threw for 147 yards and ran for 192 against sb-l. now with an upset on their mind-- the

warriors will look to end pella's win streak at 27 thursday night. to do so-- they'll need to containthe human highlight reel-- that is noah clayburg-- and stick to their run game if they want to hoist 3a title hardware thursday night. "shutting down is a bad term. we're going to try and contain him as best we can and we've got to limit his big plays that's number one. clayburg does an absolutely fantastic job of making something out of nothing. we're trying to keep it as simple as we can and play like every other game but we want to come out here and play our best so that is motivating yes. we'll just take what the team gives us defense is going to keep playing great we know that we just have to keep putting points on the board. they're a good defense we just have to execute and take advantage of what they give us and we'll come out on top " norwalk and pella kick off just after 7pm on thursday night in cedar falls. look for local 5's coverage as we preview the game a little more thursday night leading up to it-- then we'll bring you all the action at 10. jon/sx3s jack/sx3s we'll be right back... you're watching local five news at six.
